Assessment

Assessment for this course has two components:

¨       A journal– this will be about 5-6 pages long and should include a (photocopied) sample of course notes written up at the beginning and the middle of the course. You should take one or more topics of your choice (say from the early course notes submitted) and explain in 1-2 pages how your ideas have changed and whether your understanding of the chosen topic(s) has improved as the course has progressed.

¨       An essay – 1000 words or about 2.5 typed pages (1.5 spacing.) Suggested titles are below  - must be submitted three weeks before the final session.

Essay titles

Two essay titles appear below, but you have the option of a DIY title if you wish. The essay needs to address an issue through comparison of at least two authors (or ‘schools of thought’).

1. 'In rich and poor countries alike, economic globalisation is a mixed blessing'. Discuss with particular reference to at least two authors of your choice.

2. 'The global environment has deteriorated rapidly during the last few decades

of accelerating globalisation.' (Woodin & Lucas, 2004, p33). Discuss with particular reference to at least two authors of your choice.

NB: If you would like to choose your own topic, please check it with George Irvin or Pam Shaw before beginning to write.
